Day trips from Liverpool at a glance
You do not need a car for the best day trips from Liverpool. Merseyrail trains run from the city centre to Chester and Port Sunlight on the Wirral Line, and to the Sefton coast on the Northern Line. North Wales takes more planning, but new direct trains between Llandudno and Liverpool Lime Street make it easier than it used to be.
Which trip suits you depends on the weather and the season, so read the weather page before you pick a day. This guide is independent and has no link to the rail operators or the attractions.

Guided day trips to North Wales and Chester, plus city tours for your days in Liverpool, with live prices and availability.
Chester by train
The Merseyrail Wirral Line links the Liverpool city centre with Chester through Birkenhead. In the timetable valid from 17 May 2026, a train leaving Chester at 08:00 reaches James Street at 08:39 and Central at 08:45, which is 39 to 45 minutes. Treat that as one example, not a guaranteed journey time for every train.
The Eastgate Clock stands over the city wall and is the best-known landmark of the old centre. Merseyrail's Tap & Go contactless payment is not available in Chester, so buy a ticket for the return journey before you leave Liverpool, or at the station.

Port Sunlight
A planned village on the same Wirral Line, and an easy half day if you do not want a full day in Chester.
Museum and Worker's Cottage
Regular prices are £8 for adults, £7 for students, over-60s and people with disabilities, and £5.50 for children aged 5 to 16. A family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children costs £24. Children under 5 and carers who accompany a visitor go free. The summer prices that ran from 25 June to 1 September 2026 have ended.
Walking tours
The operator lists a morning walk at 11:00 with regular prices of £15 for adults, £10 for concessions and £5 for children. An afternoon walk at 14:00 is listed at lower prices. Places are limited and booking in advance is recommended, so do not assume a tour runs on every day.
Getting there
Port Sunlight has its own station on the Wirral Line, served by trains to Chester and also by Ellesmere Port services. Plan it as its own stop rather than as part of a Chester day.

Formby and the Sefton coast
Formby is a National Trust site of dunes and pinewood on the Sefton coast. It is a protected habitat, and red squirrels live in the woods. Do not feed them, and do not expect a guaranteed sighting. Resting birds should be watched from a distance. Fires and barbecues are banned.
For Lifeboat Road, use Formby station. For Victoria Road, use Freshfield. Arriving on foot, by bike or by public transport is free. National Trust members and Blue Badge holders park free after validation, and other visitors pay, with the current price shown on site. After the rebuilding works, the Victoria Road car park sits in the woods and the beach is about 0.5 miles (0.8 km) away along woodland paths and dunes. Lifeboat Road offers a shorter route via a boardwalk.
Parking fills up on sunny days and some residential streets have restrictions, so the train is easier. Check the tide before you go, and look at the National Trust notices on the day for any remaining work areas. Not far along the same coast is Crosby Beach, which is a very different outing.
North Wales
A long day, but easier by rail since the new Llandudno connections.
New direct trains
Transport for Wales promotes new direct connections between Llandudno and Liverpool Lime Street. That does not mean there is a direct train to every place in North Wales, and many journeys still involve changing at Chester.
Check the current timetable
The operator publishes timetable booklets for September 2026 covering Holyhead and Llandudno to Chester and on to Manchester or Liverpool. Use the current timetable for your date rather than an older summer plan.
Guided tours
If you would rather not plan the rail journey, minibus and coach day trips leave from central Liverpool. The tour listings on this page show current options. Conwy Castle, pictured below, is one of the sights in this part of Wales.

Tickets and getting around
Costs for the rail trips, as published by the operator.
| Ticket | Adult | Age 5 to 18 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merseyrail Day Saver, 1 Area | £4.80 | £2.40 | Not valid on weekdays 06:31 to 09:29; not valid on the City Line |
| Merseyrail Day Saver, All Areas | £6.40 | £3.20 | Same restrictions as the 1 Area ticket |
The Day Saver is no longer sold online, so buy it at a ticket office or machine, or use Tap & Go where the system accepts it. Ask which version covers your destination. Need a base for several days? See where to stay in Liverpool, and for more ideas in the city itself, things to do in Liverpool.
